The Female Athlete Program at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Sports Medicine Division provides multidisciplinary and holistic care to female athletes of all levels from elite athletes to eager novices, teenagers and adults. Holistic treatment means that: age, nutritional needs, activity levels, hormone levels and other individual factors contribute to overall health and athletic performance. Female athletes may encounter specific health issues, including: the female athlete triad (low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction and decreased bone density), ACL injuries and concussion.
In partnership with the UMass Lowell Athletic Care Office; health care practitioners from the Female Athlete Program conduct a monthly clinic to evaluate and treat the specific health issues that female athletes encounter. Students are initially seen on-campus, and if further evaluation/treatment/ care is necessary; they may be referred to the Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital. Student-Athletes are initially screened utilizing a survey conducted through Boston Children’s Hospital and may be recommended for a consultation. Athletes may also be referred for an appointment through: your team athletic trainer, team physician, member of the athletic healthcare staff, coaching staff or self-referral. Feel free to contact a member of the Athletic Healthcare staff regarding scheduling.
