Female Athlete Program
The mission of the Athletic Health Care Program is to create an environment that allows health care practitioners to successfully provide quality and equitable health care to all student-athletes at UMass Lowell. The health care needs of the student-athlete are divided into two categories:
- Athletic Injury Care - the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries; from on-field evaluation and emergency treatment through return to full activity.
- General Health Care - includes physician referrals, illness, non-athletic injuries, drug/alcohol, nutrition and eating disorder counseling, etc.
UMass Lowell's Athletic Healthcare staff utilizes a comprehensive health plan to care for all River Hawk athletes in 18 varsity sports. Eight full time, certified and licensed athletic trainers work under the supervision and direction of the Head Team Physician. In addition, UMass Lowell Athletic Healthcare continues to be a learning environment for Endicott College, Merrimack College athletic training students and other prospective athletic health care students. Athletic Healthcare works primarily out of the main athletic training room on the second floor of Costello Athletic Center. There are three satellite athletic training rooms: the Tsongas Center (M. Ice Hockey), on the first floor of Mahoney Hall (Softball) and at LeLacheur Park (Baseball).
A certified athletic trainer from the sports medicine staff is present at most in-season varsity practices and all home events. An Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) is readily available at each venue for most practices and all home events.
Athletic trainers are an integral part of every collegiate athletic program to ensure that student-athletes are competing in a safe and healthy environment. Each UMass Lowell student-athlete is monitored by yearly medical history questionnaires, and concussion baseline testing (for contact sports). On a daily basis, the athletic training staff directly supervises all high-risk sport activities. Preventive measures are taken to reduce the risk of injury and/or re-injury. Should a student-athlete become injured, the athletic trainer recognizes and evaluates the injury, provides immediate care, makes a timely referral if necessary, initiates treatment and develops rehabilitation programs for all injuries.
Education of student-athletes is extremely important in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition, hygiene, substance abuse, etc. This is done through the athletic trainers and the professionals at the student health services. Please visit our student athlete information section for more information.
The mission of the Athletic Healthcare Office is to create an environment that allows health care practitioners to successfully provide quality and equitable health care for student-athletes at UMass Lowell.UMass Lowell's Athletic Healthcare Department is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its student-athletes. It provides an environment in which primary athletics healthcare providers, defined as team physicians and athletic trainers, make medical decisions for student-athletes free of pressure or influence from non-medical factors. This approach empowers team physicians and athletic trainers to have final decision-making authority regarding the diagnosis, management and return-to-play determination for student-athletes without influence exerted by non-medical professionals, such as a coach or director of athletics. This facilitates the delivery of athlete-centered medicine, which maximizes the opportunity for quality medical care, and by extension, student-athlete health and well-being. Thus, ensuring the overall physical and mental health, and well being of our student-athletes.
