LOWELL, Mass. – Behind freshman
Edward Venta-Yepes' (Lowell, Mass.) first career-goal in the first half, the UMass Lowell men's soccer team defeated the University of Buffalo, 2-0, for its second-straight win.
"The guys played well and were disciplined," said Head Coach
Christian Figueroa. "We changed the game plan a little bit and it was well executed. We threw out a few different things than we've been doing this year and it was good to see it executed. The clean sheet today was very important for us and Austin (Kroll) did well in the back. Overall, it was a good performance and the guys in the back did a good job dealing with their strikers."
In the 19th minute,
Guilherme Rodrigues (Lowell, Mass.) sent a ball into the box and Venta-Yepes took the original shot, which was blocked, but recovered the loose ball and fired it into the right corner of the net.
The Bulls (3-2-1) could not muster any shots on
Austin Kroll (Baltimore, Md.) in the first half, and the River Hawks (3-2) took the 1-0 lead into the second stanza.
Augusto Trento (Leominster, Mass.) doubled the lead in the 50th minute when a free kick was sent to
Guilherme Desousa (Everett, Mass.), whose cross got deflected by
Eric Martin (Danvers, Mass.) in the six-yard box and fell to Trento, who put the ball in the open net.
Kroll made his only save in the 87th minute when Russell Cicerone sent a volley that sent Kroll diving to his left. The sophomore keeper is now tied for fourth all-time with eight clean sheets.
Buffalo outshot UMass Lowell 11-9, but the River Hawks had four shots on goal to the Bulls' one.
UMass Lowell continues its homestand when Canisius travels to Cushing Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, September 13.Â
