MEN’S SOCCER: William Clayton Joins UMass Lowell’s Men’s Soccer Coaching Staff for Inaugural Division I Season

Clayton joins UMass Lowell’s coaching staff after three years as an assistant coach with Wake Forest

William Clayton will serve as the newest member of the UMass Lowell men's soccer coaching staff as the River Hawks prepare for their first season in the Division I America East Conference.

"We are all very excited to welcome Will to UMass Lowell after three years on the staff at Wake Forest University," said UMass Lowell head coach, Christian Figueroa. "Will comes from one of the most highly respected and successful programs in college soccer: a winning culture that develops players and teams the right way."

Clayton comes to UMass Lowell after three seasons as the assistant coach at Wake Forest University where he had a wide range of responsibility.

"Will's philosophy fits UMass Lowell perfectly and I believe that he will help us continue to develop our culture of excellence both on and off the field, and ultimately achieve our program goals," added Figueroa.

At Wake Forest, Clayton's on field responsibilities included the development of the midfield unit and "2nd team" as well as the organization of team managers and equipment. In addition to these duties, Clayton was responsible for all team travel and meals.

Aside from his on field duties, Clayton was the head of all media produced by the soccer office. This media included scouting videos and PowerPoint, game footage, training diagrams, recruiting videos, camp brochures and email blasts.

In 2011, Clayton was the interim assistant coach and represented Wake Forest at events across the United States where he gained experience with compliance with the recruiting process.

Clayton has been the head coach for the TCYSA: U12-15 Classic Boys team since 2010 and the head coach for the NC Fusion: U15 Classic Boys team since 2012.

In addition to his coaching experience, Clayton had a decorated career as a player. A Wake Forest University graduate, Clayton was a NCAA Division I National Champion (2007), and an ACC Regular Season Champion (2006, 2008). Clayton's team also went to the NCAA College Cup in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

In 2006, Clayton won his team's "Deacon Award" which is chosen by the coaches.

Clayton graduated from Wake Forest in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in History.
