Junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, MA) placed 26th and earned All-American honors as the UMass Lowell men’s cross country team placed 16th while the women placed 23rd at the NCAA Championship Saturday afternoon at Southern Indiana University.

Led by MacDonald, the UMass Lowell men compiled 396 points (26, 82, 87, 92, 109 – 112, 118) as Adams (CO) State won the team title with a sterling 23 points (1, 3, 4, 7, 8). Western (CO) State placed second with 86 points and was followed by Colorado School of Mines (153), Western Washington (170) and Grand Valley State (185).

The River Hawks were the top East Region team as Stonehill took 21st with 474 points.

The River Hawk women compiled 587 points (97, 111, 116, 123, 140 – 151, 155), placing second among East Region entries. Stonehill placed 16th with 367 points.

Adams State also captured the women’s title with 73 points (7, 9, 14, 17, 26) while

Grand Valley State placed second with 81 points. Missouri Southern (104), Seattle Pacific (151) and Alaska Anchorage (158) rounded out the top five.

MacDonald placed 37th overall and ran the 10K course in 32:29.4. He became UMass Lowell’s fifth All-American of the decade, following Ruben Sanca (2007), Chris Kapfer (2004) and Carl Mease (2001, 2002).

Only 35.9 seconds separated UMass Lowell’s runners second through fifth. Junior Sean Gelinas (Northwood, NH) placed 82nd among scorers (98th overall) in 33:44.2 while junior Greg Wilson (Chelmsford, MA) placed 87th/103rd in 33:52.3.

Sophomore Eric McDonald (Groveland, MA) placed 92nd/109th in 33:59.9 while sophomore Danny Wang (Haverhill, MA) capped UMass Lowell’s scoring effort in 109th/127th with a time of 34:20.1.

Senior Steve O’Brien (Groton, MA) placed in 130th/112th in 34:22.8 while senior Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) finished in 137th/118th in 34:38.3.

Reuben Mwei of Adams State won the men’s individual title in 30:27.8.

Junior Lyra Clark (Nashua, NH) led the UMass Lowell women, placing 97th among scoring runners and 116th overall in 23:18.8 for the 6K course. Junior Sarah Bonomo (Tewksbury, MA) placed 111th/130th in 23:31.3 while senior Haley Catarius (Marshfield, MA) placed 116th/135th in 23:36.1.

Freshman Kelly Walton (Nahant, MA) took 123rd/142nd and junior Ivory Farren (Chelmsford, MA) capped the scoring runners in 140th/159th with a time of 24:07.0. Freshman Gina Butler (Dracut, MA) placed 151st/170th in 24:51.9 and freshman Nicole Skotz (Tewksbury, MA) took 155th/174th in 25:13.0.

Senior Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific won the women’s individual title in 20:22.6.
