Sophomore Ashley Zielinski (Manchester, NH) captured two events to lead the UMass Lowell women’s track and field team at the MIT Coed Invitational Saturday at the Johnson Athletic Center.
The non-scoring meet drew a handful of Division II and III colleges. UMass Lowell rested the majority of its team in preparation for Friday’s Boston University Terrier Classic.
Zielinski captured both the 55 meter hurdles and the 200 meter dash, the former in 8.70 seconds and the latter in 26.67 seconds.
Senior Heather McCarthy (Burlington, MA), who placed second in the 200 in 27.66 seconds, highlighted her afternoon by winning the long jump with a distance of 16 feet, 3.75 inches. McCarthy also placed tied for sixth in the high jump (4’ 7.0’’).
Zielinski and McCarthy led five River Hawks who claimed individual titles on the day. Senior Katrina Lutkus (Lowell, MA) won the 55 meter dash in 7.50 seconds, edging senior teammate Sharikka Finley-Moise (Lexington, MA), who was right behind in 7.51.
Junior Lyra Clark (Nashua, NH) led UMass Lowell’s middle distance runners as she captured the 800 meters in 2:23.77. Clark led two teammates in the top six places as freshman Nicole Skotz (Tewksbury, MA) took fifth in 2:31.96 and senior Katelyn Allen (Marshfield, MA) sixth in 2:34.04.
Senior Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA) won the shot put – her third title in five weeks – with a throw of 45’ 7.25’’. Freshman Robyn Ciriello (Salem, NH) placed second with a toss of 37’ 2.5’’.
Sophomore Chrissy Silvar (Fitchburg, MA) and freshman Jessica Davis (Quincy, MA) both earned runner-up results. Silvar placed second in the pole vault, clearing 10’ 6.0’’ while Davis placed second in the 3,000 meters (11:50.35).
In other events, UMass Lowell placed third in the 4x400 meter relay in 4:28.06, behind sophomore Jenna Lapachinski (Turners Falls, MA), who ran a 65.3-second leg; sophomore Amy Pflanz (Burlington, MA), who ran a 67.1-second split; freshman Sarah Colaianni (Hudson, MA) in 70.4 seconds; and Clark in 64.3 seconds.
