The UMass Lowell River Hawks are getting back to school and returning to the field. Wasting no time, the softball team is playing an impressive fall game and scrimmage schedule, slated to begin on Sept. 11 at home.
“I am very excited about our fall schedule. The first two weekends will showcase us at home against three Division I teams whose programs are on the rise,” Head Coach Sean Cotter said. “We will be tested right away.”
Those teams include Holy Cross, Siena and Brown on the docket, opening with the Holy Cross Crusaders at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11. Later that afternoon, the River Hawks will take on Siena at 3:35 and the following day will be a homecoming of sorts, with the UMass Lowell Softball Alumni Game at noon on Sept. 12.
After hosting Brown on Sept. 18, the squad will hit the road and go to Plattsburgh State, where Cotter coached prior to coming to UMass Lowell last year.
“I am really looking forward to the trip to Plattsburgh,” Cotter said. “Coach Zweig did a great job to get them back to the SUNYAC Championship game and they have an up-and-coming pitcher who had a super freshman campaign. It will be good to mix with the program that I started over ten years ago."
The road games will continue with games at Long Island University and Hofstra over the following two weekends.
“The last two dates will provide a real challenge for us, playing such strong teams that have had major successes at the DI and DIII levels,” Cotter said. “Hofstra and LIU are arguably the two best DI programs in the Northeast right now. It is exciting to go against two of the best coaches in all of college softball in Bill Edwards (Hofstra) and Roy Kortman (LIU).”
Finally, they will close the fall season against Eastern Connecticut back at home on Oct. 3 at 11:30 a.m.
“The very next day [after returning from New York], it will not get any easier, as we will be facing one of the top teams in DIII in Eastern Connecticut,” Cotter said of the Warriors, who finished the season ranked third in DIII softball last year.
