The UMass Lowell River Hawks (5-5) even their season record to .500 with a pair of losses against Bethel and Mount Vernon Nazarene, 13-6 and 3-1 decisions, respectively. The games were played at Clermont's National Training Center on Thursday night and kicked off the second leg of the River Hawks' spring trip.
The River Hawks were led offensively by freshmen Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, MA) and Brianna Mahoney (Billerica, MA) with two hits apiece while the lone UMass Lowell run was scored by sophomore C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) with a homerun in the third.
The catcher's homer gave the River Hawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning, but Mount Vernon Nazarene came back with a two-run fourth and followed up with another run in the fifth for a cushion UMass Lowell was unable to bounce back from.
Freshman P Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, MA) earned the loss and stands at 3-2 on the year. She pitched four innings while allowing six hits and a pair of runs, tallying two strikeouts and one walk in the game. She was relieved by Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY), who threw two innings and allowed two hits and a run. Mount Vernon Nazarene's Stephanie Burlew earned the win and improved to 3-1 on the young season. She pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three hits and no runs.
UMass Lowell will look to bounce back with a game against St. Thomas Aquinas (9:30 a.m.) and Rollins College (5:30 p.m.) tomorrow at the National Training Center.
