MANCHESTER, NH – Freshman F Kaitlynn McHugh (Winchester, MA) scored the equalizer in the 43rd minute as UMass Lowell and Southern New Hampshire University played to a 1-1 deadlock in double overtime in the Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer regular season finale for both teams Tuesday night at George J. Larkin Field. With the draw, the River Hawks stand at 7-4-5 overall and 6-3-5 in the NE-10 (sixth) and await the result of the New Haven-Southern Connecticut match, postponed Tuesday night due to inclement weather, to determine its seed for the NE-10 Tournament. Southern New Hampshire is currently 8-4-4 overall and 7-4-3 in the Conference (fifth). The stalemate was UMass Lowell’s fifth of the season, setting a school record. The River Hawks outshot the Penmen 23-8 overall – 12-3 in the second half and 7-0 in extra time – and 9-4 on target. Junior G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) turned away three shots for UMass Lowell while senior G Stef Young halted eight shots for Southern New Hampshire. Southern New Hampshire opened the scoring in just the third minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. Freshman F Ariel Teixeira possessed a failed clearance at the top of the box and slotted to unmarked senior F Sophia St. Paul for the easy goal. The River Hawks leveled in the 43rd minute, also on a defensive miscue, when McHugh dispossessed Young on a backpass, dribbled around and tucked into the open net. UMass Lowell had a pair of opportunities to win the match in the second overtime, both off corner kicks by senior M Grace Larsen (Newburyport, MA). In the 108th minute, freshman M Maddy Bissaillon (Merrimac, MA) had her shot saved by Young and put her rebound over the bar. Larsen delivered another corner immediately after, but an attempt by sophomore Ella Merullo (Wakefield, MA) was denied by Young.
