Saint Rose Trips UMass Lowell, 2-0

ALBANY, NY – Freshman forwards Brittany Godin and Gianna D’Errico each scored goals in either half to lead the College of Saint Rose over UMass Lowell, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer match in Albany, NY. With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 6-4-3 overall and 5-3-3- in the NE-10 entering Wednesday’s regular season home final against Assumption (7:00). Saint Rose improved to 9-3-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the Conference. Godin opened the scoring in the 28th minute when the River Hawks failed to clear a free kick, which Godin toe-poked past UML goalkeeper Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) out of a scramble. In the 70th, D’Errico doubled the Golden Knights lead when she beat Gillis one-on-one after touches from freshman F Christina Cuffari and freshman M Nicola D’Errico eluded the UMass Lowell defense. The River Hawks nearly cut the lead in half in the 89th minute when junior G Shannon Murphy batted away a free kick taken by junior D Kathleen Strazzere (Wilmington, MA). On the ensuing corner kick, a header by freshman M Hannah Merullo (Wakefield, MA) header went right to the grasp of Murphy. Saint Rose outshot UMass Lowell, 14-7 overall and 9-5 on target. Gillis had seven saves while Murphy stopped five shots.
