Dec. 22, 2009
The UMass Lowell field hockey team, fresh off another spectacular season in which it advanced to the NCAA Championship, will be featured on the "CBS Presents Championships of the NCAA" Saturday at 1:30 on CBS 4 Boston.
The hour-long special profiles the fall 2009 Division II and III men's and women's teams which advanced to NCAA Championships. Also included are the Division II and III men's and women's soccer finalists as well as those in cross country and volleyball.
The show marks the fifth year in which UMass Lowell has been featured. The River Hawks have appeared in the NCAA Division II championship match - winning it in 2005 - five times in the last seven years.
Snippets of the River Hawk men and women's cross country teams may also be included in the special as both teams advanced to the NCAA Championship together for the seventh straight year (The men placed 16th while the women came in 23rd).
The field hockey team stunned Tournament host Stonehill College in the semifinal (1-0) to move on to the championship for the third straight year. The River Hawks were denied by 16-time champion Bloomsburg, 3-2.
During the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship, the CBS crew chronicled the UMass Lowell and Bloomsburg University student-athletes both off the field of play, in the locker room and leading up to the championship match. Included are special interest angles and interviews with the student-athletes and coaches.
Featured among the storylines of the field hockey segment will be UMass Lowell senior Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA), who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament early in the season. Instead of having season-ending surgery, Moulton rehabilitated her knee enough to return to the lineup and opted to have surgery performed at the end of the season.
For the third straight year, the special will be hosted by Sam Ryan, formerly of CBS' NFL Today show; and produced by Mark Burghart, with Sarah Rinaldi, Alanna Campbell, Julie Landa and Lindsay Goward serving as the feature producers.
