Senior Molly Clay (Rockport, MA), a chemical engineering major, earned her fourth consecutive spot on the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad, while the entire UMass Lowell field hockey team was named one of the Division II National Academic Team Award recipients, as announced by NFHCA Executive Director Jennifer Goodrich on Tuesday. Eight of Clay's teammates were also honored with spots on the squad.

Juniors Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA), a nursing major, and Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA), majoring in marketing and finance, have been named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad in each of their three years as River Hawks.

Senior Psychology major Kayla LeSage (Amesbury, MA) and criminal justice major Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) were each named for the second time.

The freshman class was well-represented, as well, as four rookies were named to the team. Sarah Demty (Seekonk, MA), Chelsea Gillies (Chelmsford, MA), Vanessa Kent (Charlton, MA) and Sarah Wilcox (Old Town, ME) were tabbed to the squad in their first season of eligibility.

The NFHCA recognized student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2009-10 academic year, while the National Academic Team Award is given to those institutions whose team has achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester.

The River Hawks are coming off a stellar season, finishing the year 18-6 with their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II National Championship game. They earned a 7-3 mark in Northeast-10 action and a nearly perfect 10-1 record at home on Cushing Field.
