The UMass Lowell distance medley relay team placed eighth and earned All-American honors to highlight a stellar showing by UMass Lowell on the first day of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The result highlighted a spectacular day as four of five River Hawk individuals advanced to the finals in their respective events.

UMass Lowell's finish in the distance medley relay marked the fifth time in six years it has earned All-American status. The foursome posted a time of 10:15.51.

Junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, MA), having run the open mile just two hours earlier, led off in the 1,200 meters and posted a time of 3:08.44, while sophomore Jeff Wundt (Southwick, MA) ran the 400 meter dash in 48.22 seconds. Sophomore Danny Wang (Haverhill, MA) followed in the 800 meters in 1:56.34 and senior Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) ran the mile in 4:22.32.

Adams State won the DMR in 9:53.33. The top eight finishers in each event earn All-America status.

MacDonald shined individually as he placed fifth in the mile preliminary in 4:11.88 and moves on to the final Saturday at 5:40 (Eastern standard time). Brian Medogovich of Adams State led all milers with a time of 4:10.62.

Freshman Evan White (Tewksbury, MA) led UMass Lowell's individual efforts as he placed fourth in the 200 meter dash preliminary and set a school record for the second time this season.

White ran the course in 21.59 seconds - edging his own previous mark of 21.63 - and advances to Saturday's final at 7:25. Josh Scott of St. Augustine's University won the 200 preliminary with a time of 21.12 seconds.

Junior Donte Brown (Raynham, MA), looking to earn All-America for the second straight year, placed seventh in the 400 meter dash preliminary in 48.31 seconds. Leford Green of Johnson C. Smith won the preliminary in 46.98 seconds. The 400 meters final is slated for Saturday at 6:00.

Senior Haley Catarius (Marshfield, MA), a five-time All-American competing in her ninth NCAA Championship, advanced to the 800 meters final as she ran the preliminary in 2:14.79, good for eighth place. Catarius trailed the leader, Anja Puc (2:13.50) of Nebraska-Omaha, by just 1.29 seconds, and will run in the championship Saturday at 6:30.

Freshman Shannon Cunningham (Foxboro, MA), seeded 14th in the 400 meter dash, did one better in the preliminary, finishing 13th in 57.21, just 1.18 seconds of qualifying for the final.

Cunningham and Catarius, along with sophomores Amy Delgado (Bridgewater, MA) and Nicole Giaquinto (Winthrop, MA), will also run the women's 4X400 meter relay Saturday at 8:15 while Brown, Wundt, freshman Craig Bennett (Milton, MA) and senior Robert Liekweg (Salem, NH) will run the men's 4X400 relay at 8:25.

Senior Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA), seeded fourth in the shot put, is scheduled for 6:05.
