The UMass Lowell men’s distance medley relay team provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship to lead a host of stellar efforts by the men’s track and field team at the Yale University Giegengack Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Coxe Cage.

UMass Lowell was one of a handful Division II and III teams to compete at the meet, which drew the likes of Providence, Rutgers, Monmouth and Brown.

The River Hawk distance medley relay team placed sixth overall and tops among Division II and III teams with a time of 10:06.00 to meet the NCAA Provisional mark. Sophomore Danny Wang (Haverhill, MA) ran the 1,200 meters in 3:09 while junior Donte Brown (Raynham, MA) ran the 400 meter dash in 47.7 seconds. Freshman Chris Estrella (Lowell, MA) ran the 800 meters in 1:56.83 and senior Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA) closed in the mile, which he ran in 4:12.39.

UMass Lowell’s effort currently ranks seventh in the country.

Guerin also did well individually as he placed 15th in the open mile (tops among Division II-III entries) with a time of 4:19.12.

Senior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, MA) enjoyed another strong week in the long jump as he leaped a distance of 22 feet, 5.25 inches, a mere inch behind titlist Daniel Wu of UMass. Nguidjoi also placed in a tie for ninth (tied for first) in the triple jump with Southern Connecticut’s Jeffrey Williams with a distance of 42’ 6.75’’.

Freshman Josh Adams (Methuen, MA) placed 14th (third) in the long jump with a leap of 20’ 0.5’’.

Sophomore Jeff Wundt (Southwick, MA) placed second in the 400 meter dash and led three UMass Lowell sprinters in the top six places. Wundt posted a time of 49.06 seconds, just behind Tim Carey of the University of Pennsylvania (49.01).

Freshman Evan White (Tewksbury, MA) took fourth in 49.31 while freshman Craig Bennett (Milton, MA) placed sixth in 49.63.

Junior Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) was the top Division II-III finisher in the shot put (fourth overall) with a toss of 52’ even.

UMass Lowell enters the FasTrack Classic Friday at Boston University.
