Jan. 31, 2010 Junior Donte Brown (Raynham, MA) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship and freshman Evan White (Tewksbury, MA) broke a school record to lead the UMass Lowell men's track and field team at the Boston University Terrier Invitational Saturday at the BU Track & Tennis Center. The non-scoring meet drew schools and athletes from all three NCAA divisions as well as many athletes representing postgraduate track and field clubs from around the country. Brown and White were among four individuals and one relay team to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championship. Brown placed fourth overall and first among NCAA Division II and III sprinters in the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.94 seconds, which currently sits third on the NCAA Division II Performance List. He also ran a 49.03-second leg on UMass Lowell's 4X400 meter relay team which placed second overall and first among college foursomes in 3:15.64, currently the second-fastest result in the country. Following Brown's lead was sophomore Jeff Wundt (Southwick, MA), who also ran 49.03; freshman Craig Bennett (Milton, MA), who ran a 48.4 split; and senior Robert Liekweg (Salem, NH), who anchored in 48.8. Wundt also placed 14th overall (third among Division II-III runners) in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.27. White topped all collegiate runners and placed third overall in the 200 meter dash, shattering the school record with a time of 21.63 seconds. White placed behind only Edino Steel (21.07) of Zenith Velocity and independent Marvin Lewis (21.56), besting the previous record of 21.82 seconds set by Lawrence Aidoo in 2006. The result, which is third on the Division II list, virtually books White's place for the NCAA Championship. Junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, MA) also enjoyed a special day as he placed seventh overall, second among collegiate runners and tops in the Division II-III field, in the mile with a time of 4:07.92. The result, which ranks second on the Division II list, fell just 1.29 seconds shy of matching the school record of 4:06.63 set by Steve DeWitt in 2008. Junior Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) improved to 15th on the Division II list as he placed third overall and first among collegiate throwers in the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 9.0 inches. Senior Justin Oliver (Lowell, MA) also enjoyed a stellar afternoon as he led the Division II-III field in the 500 meters and placed eighth overall in 1:06.4. Seniors William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, MA) and Matt Blazon (Lowell, MA) also impressed. Nguidjoi placed sixth overall (third) in the triple jump with a distance of 43' 7.75''; and 13th overall (third) in the long jump with a distance of 20' 7.25''. Blazon placed 16th (third) in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.36 seconds. Additionally, sophomore Jeff Veiga (Lowell, MA) and junior Greg Wilson (Chelmsford, MA) each turned in personal bests in the 3,000 meters. Veiga placed 28th overall (second) in 8:28.20 while Wilson took 34th (fourth) in 8:34.27. UMass Lowell enters the Yale University Giegengack Invitational next Saturday and Sunday. |
