Junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, MA) was the top collegiate runner in the 1,000 meter and led the UMass Lowell 4X800 meter relay team to the title to highlight the MIT Coed Track and Field Invitational at the Johnson Athletic Center.

The non-scoring meet drew a handful of Division II and III colleges. UMass Lowell rested many members of its team in preparation for Friday’s Boston University Terrier Classic.

MacDonald ran the 1,000 meters in 2:31.63, just behind independent Peter Najem who took first in 2:31.31. MacDonald also ran a 1:57.8 leg on UMass Lowell’s 4X800 meter relay team which placed first in 7:59.63. Joining him was senior Tim Guerin (Auburn, MA), who ran a 2:02.8 leg; sophomore Danny Wang (Haverhill, MA), who ran a 1:56.3 split; and freshman Chris Estrella (Lowell, MA), who ran in 2:02.7.

Guerin also took sixth in the 1,000 meters in 2:39.31 while Estrella placed sixth in the mile in 4:29.10.

MacDonald led three UMass Lowell athletes who earned titles on the afternoon. Junior Greg Wilson (Chelmsford, MA) captured the mile in 4:24.36 and led two teammates in the top six: sophomore Jeff Veiga (Lowell, MA), who was the runner-up in 4:24.83 and Estrella.

Senior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, MA) won his second triple jump title in as many weeks as he covered 43 feet, 11.25 inches. Nguidjoi also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 21’ 5.5’’.

Freshman Josh Adams (Methuen, MA) won the 200 meter dash in 23.34 seconds and also placed second in the 55 meter dash in 6.73 seconds. Adams was among three River Hawks in the top five places as freshman Nick Delguidice (Leominster, MA) and sophomore Mark Paquette (Dracut, MA) placed in a tie for fifth with a time of 23.72 seconds.

A handful of UMass Lowell athletes finished as runners-up on the day, including junior Brody Griffiths (Woburn, MA) who took fifth in the 800 meters in 2:04.76 and freshman Craig Bennett (Milton, MA), who placed second in the 600 meters (1:22.97). Freshman Brendan Devlin (Weston, MA) took second in the 3,000 meters in 9:22.15.

In other events, junior Matt Blazon (Lowell, MA) placed third in the high jump (5’ 11.25’’) and fourth in the 55 meter hurdles (8.35 seconds); while junior Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) took third in the shot put (46’ 11.5’’).
