LOWELL – Jamie Wangia, a senior midfielder from Lowell, MA, was selected to participate in an invitation-only tryout for the New England Revolution Monday at Gillette Stadium.
Wangia is the sole Division II player tabbed to participate in the field, the majority of which were Division II players representing the likes of Boston College and the University of Connecticut.
“Jamie offers a rare combination of size, athleticism, technical ability and tactical intelligence,” said UMass Lowell Head Coach Ted Prestly. “He is simply a ball winner, a total soccer player who thinks and plays his way into a game. He could do very well in this tryout. I like his chances.”
Wangia enjoyed his best season last fall in which he was the recipient of several awards, including NE-10 All-Conference First Team and All-East Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
A 6-foot-3 midfielder, Wangia registered eight goals – the majority off headers and set pieces – and six assists this season. He was integral in guiding the River Hawks to a 13-4-4 record (9-1-3 in the NE-10) which included a share of the NE-10 regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the NE-10 Tournament.
UMass Lowell advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year (fourth time in six years) in which it moved on to the East Region championship/quarterfinal round before suffering a 1-0 loss at Dowling in the final minute of double overtime.
Along the way, the River Hawks defeated Molloy (3-2) and Southern New Hampshire (2-1).
Wangia is the latest of several former players to earn an invitation to the Revolution camp. In 2004, former All-American defender Jonathan Curran and All-Northeast-10 Conference midfielder Tim Garry were chosen. In 2007, former forward Andrew Doherty and midfielder/current assistant coach Christian Figueroa were tabbed.
Last year, former midfielder Edens Chery was selected to participate.
