Oct. 17, 2009
Sophomore F Cedric Panzu scored the lone goal in the 83rd minute as Southern Connecticut State defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Saturday night in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer clash at Jess Dow Field.
The loss – UMass Lowell’s seventh one-goal setback of the season – left the River Hawks with a 3-10 record (2-9 in the NE-10) entering Wednesday’s non-conference home match with Post University (7:00).
The win was the third straight and fifth in the last six matches for the Owls, who improved to 10-3-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the Conference.
The Owls nearly went ahead in the 22nd minute when UMass Lowell was whistled for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for sophomore F Paul Templeton.
However, sophomore G Matt Lavery (Nashua, NH), deputizing for senior Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) in the first half, guessed correctly and thwarted the spot kick to keep matters level.
Panzu scored the winner, however, just three minutes after replacing sophomore F Eric Vasquez in the 80th minute.
Lavery stopped two shots in 29 minutes before being replaced by Richards, who had one save. Sophomore Andrew Esposito stopped two shots for the Owls.
