![]() 2009 Riley Reunion Night will feature UMass Lowell Hockey Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony |
Aug. 6, 2009
The UMass Lowell Hockey Hall of Honor will induct three members of the hockey community as its class of 2009 in a pre-game ceremony before the River Hawks' match against Hockey East foe Northeastern on October 24.
The event will coincide with the second annual Riley Reunion Night during Homecoming Weekend. Last year marked the inaugural induction into the Hall, when legendary UMass Lowell hockey coach Bill Riley was honored as the first recipient of the honor.
Riley stood at the helm of the UMass Lowell bench for 22 seasons, guiding the program from a Division II powerhouse with three national titles to a Division I contender in the nation's top collegiate hockey conference, Hockey East.
The inductees are voted on by a selection committee comprised of former UMass Lowell hockey players, coaches and administrators. The criteria are as follows:
The nominee must be five years removed from their service to the University.
Eligibility shall be based first on demonstrated achievements and contributions to the University's hockey program. Contributions to the sport of hockey in general can also be considered.
The induction to the Hockey Hall of Honor will be held annually in conjunction with a home hockey game.
Candidates may be nominated by anyone. Once a nomination is received, it shall be reviewed and discussed by the Hockey Hall of Honor selection and organizing committee. Nominations can also be presented by the selection and organizing committee.
The celebration will begin at 2:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception, brief speaking program and raffle, followed by the game at 5:00 p.m. The game marks the first time the teams have met since the River Hawks stunned the Huskies in an overtime upset in the semi-finals of the 2009 Hockey East Tournament at the TD Garden in Boston.
More information on the event and inductees will become available in September. For additional information, please contact Eric Allen (eric_allen@uml.edu; (978) 934-2337) or Elizabeth Paige Fierman (elizabeth_fierman@uml.edu).
