A Conversation with Scott Campbell at the Boston Bruins Development Camp, July, 2009 Scott Campbell's Current Blog Blog #4 - July 9th, 2009 As another day winds down here at camp, I can say on behalf of all the players, that everyone is surely feeling some tightness in the hips and groins. The guys have this feeling because we haven't been through practices like this since last season, so it's natural. Throughout camp we've been working extremely hard and today was no let down either. We arrived at Ristuccia shortly before 9 a.m. and went through a team stretch to try and loosen up the legs from yesterday's skate. We took the ice at 9:30 and were put through a practice until 11. Again, this session was intense, and the guys were skating at a high tempo. This ice session consisted of half ice breakout drills and a shooting drill to warm up. Following that we got into some more flow drills and some more battling. The battling drill was tough, as we were split up into two groups and each group was sent to opposite ends of the ice. At your end of the ice a coach would dump a puck into the corner and two players would battle 1 on 1, trying to score (the same thing is happening at the other end). The coach would then blow the whistle and the players battling had to sprint to the far end, where another puck was set out and another 1 on 1 battle would engage. This drill remained the same and later turned into 2 on 2 battles. We then jumped into a full ice line drill. It was a progressive drill that started as a 2 on 0, then 2 on 1, 3 on 1, and finally 3 on 2. We finished the first hour and a half session with some more shooting drills. We returned to the ice at 11:20, warmed up on our own, and started a skills session. This session wasn't as tough as the first, but was still challenging, and fatigue was no help. We did a series of puckhandling drills, both forwards and back, as well as some lateral movement. We had a keep away drill, working on our puck protection. The coach then had us line up in five lines and five lines of cones were placed from the hash marks to the far blueline. We were put through a handful of more puckhandling drills which involved weaving and pivoting around the cones, stopping and starting between cones, etc. Lastly, we had a couple puck races, stretched, and left the ice. After the session, most guys could be found in the weight room riding bikes and doing some extra curricular stretching to try and help prevent the legs from further tightening up. To close the day, we headed out to spend a couple hours at F1 Boston. After a little more than an hour of racing, we had dinner at the track and headed back to the hotel. Well, I'm heading to bed. Thanks to everyone who's been following, I truly appreciate the support. Side note: I was talking to Carter Hutton earlier today and he wanted me to wish all the best from Thunder Bay. Hutts hopes everyone is enjoying the summer and can't wait to get back to start up another year of UMass Lowell hockey! -Soup |
