A Conversation with Scott Campbell at the Boston Bruins Development Camp, July, 2009

Blog #6 - July 11th, 2009

Today was the final day of camp, so this will be my last post. A special thanks again to everyone who followed along, your support is greatly appreciated. Many thanks to our devoted UMass Lowell fans as well, I look forward to seeing you all out at the rinks this upcoming year.

Per standard, team stretch was at 9 a.m. and we took the ice at 9:30. We were put through odd man rush drills, line drills and simple shooting drills. After the practice, we remained on the ice and played 20 minutes of 4 on 4. We ended this first session with a team stretch at center ice and returned to the locker room for a flood. Our second session was more skill work. This session included some sprints, some battling drills and in large part a lot of puck protection stuff. We skated until 12:05, thus ending the on-ice part of camp. Once we got changed, strength and conditioning coach, John Whitesides, took time to speak to us about the importance of off-ice training/conditioning as well as nutrition and any other aspects related to off season work. Each player also had an individual exit meeting with some of the staff, namely Don Sweeney, the director of player development.

Once done at the rink, we briefly stopped in back at the hotel, then headed to Coach Sweeney's house for a cookout. At the cookout, Peter Chiarelli, the General Manager of the Bruins, spoke to us about the expectations and responsibilities players need to abide by in order to play for the big club. He also asked each individual his opinion on the camp and what they took out of it.

It's been an incredible experience for me personally and I feel I was able to achieve what I set out here to do. I had the goal coming into camp to learn more about myself as a player, and learn about what it takes to make it to the next level. With the help of camp and the staff, I was able to identify some weaknesses in my game that need to be addressed in order for me to maximize my playing ability, even if it's something as simple as breaking down the stride and working on my edges.

One last night in Burlington and it's back to Ottawa for me tomorrow. I wish everyone the best and have a great summer. Thanks again and see you all in a few months.
