The UMass Lowell River Hawks are ranked fifth in the first NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball East Region Ranking of the 2009-10 season, as announced by the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee on Wednesday.

The Northeast-10 Conference has seven of the top ten teams in the region, beginning with Bentley (16-2) taking the top spot. The Falcons are followed by Stonehill (15-3) in second, Merrimack (12-4) in third, Adelphi (14-6) in fourth and the River Hawks fifth (12-6). Finishing out the top ten are Saint Anselm (12-6), Bloomfield (12-3), Philadelphia University (13-6), Southern New Hampshire (11-7) and Felician (12-4).

The River Hawks will meet five of the NE-10’s other six ranked teams in the month of February, looking to gain ground in conference standings during the final stretch of the season.

UMass Lowell is led by NE-10 leading scorer Kyle Caiola (Parma, OH), who is averaging 22.0 PPG. Despite coming off a pair of losses, UMass Lowell looks to bounce back with a trip to New Haven for a conference tilt at Southern Connecticut State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The rankings will be released on a weekly basis, every Wednesday through March 3 and can be found on the sidebar of the men's basketball page on GoRiverHawks.com(.)
