LOWELL, Mass. (Apr. 13, 2009) – Jack Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) struck out eight over seven innings of work, but Southern Connecticut defeated UMass Lowell, 3-1, in game two of a Northeast-10 doubleheader at LeLacheur Park.

The Owls swept the River Hawks in the doubleheader and improve to 12-16 overall and 7-7 against the NE-10. The River Hawks have dropped four straight. They fall to 16-11 overall and 8-7 against the league.

Southern Connecticut scored three runs on just four hits, scoring single runs in the third, sixth and eighth.

UMass Lowell managed just one run on three hits. UML scored its run in the top of the sixth.

Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) earned the win on the mound for the Owls. He allowed just one run, an unearned run, on three hits in a complete game, nine-inning effort. He struck out six and walked just one.

Leathersich was the tough-luck loser for UML. He fanned eight over seven innings, allowing just one earned run (two total runs) on three hits in seven innings.

Offensively Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Mass.) and Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) were each 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Babb doubled in the Owls second run in the bottom of the sixth. Geffert capped the scoring with a run-scoring double in the eighth.

Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) got Southern Connecticut on the board in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly.

The River Hawks scored their only run of the game in the top of the sixth. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.), who had three hits and two RBI in game one, plated the River Hawks only run of game two with a ground out to first base.

The River Hawks return to the field Tuesday night when they host Southern New Hampshire (7:00 p.m.) at LeLacheur Park. The Owls next play Tuesday at Merrimack.
