LOWELL, Mass. (Apr. 13, 2009) - Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) had three hits and two RBI, but Southern Connecticut defeated UMass Lowell, 10-3, Monday afternoon in the first game of a Northeast-10 doubleheader at LeLacheur Park.
The Owls snapped their three game losing streak. They improved to 11-16 overall and 6-7 in the NE-10. The River Hawks have lost three straight. They fall to 16-10 overall and 8-6 against the league.
Southern Connecticut had four multiple run innings, scoring two runs in each the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings. The Owls had nine hits in the game.
Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) led the way offensively for Southern Connecticut. He was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Keene paced the River Hawk attack with three hits and two RBI. He had RBI singles in the fifth and seventh.
Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) put the Owls on the board with a solo home run to right field in the top of the second.
After UML evened the game in the bottom of the second DeProspo put Southern Connecticut on top for good driving in the next four runs. He double in two in the third and singled home two more in the fifth.
The Owls added two more runs in the sixth, a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
The River Hawks added single runs in the fifth and seventh to cap their scoring.
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) got the win for Southern Connecticut. He allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits over eight innings of work. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
Kyle Davis (Rochester, N.H.) took the loss for UML. He allowed five runs on five hits over five innings. Davis struck out four and walked five.
The two teams conclude their doubleheader Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
