A native of Chelmsford, MA, Anthony Santos enters his first year on the UMass Lowell coaching staff and will work exclusively with UMass Lowell's infielders. Santos was a two-year standout second baseman/shortstop with the River Hawks (2006-08), which followed two years at the University of Massachusetts. Santos transferred to UMass Lowell in the fall of 2005 and immediately claimed his spot at second base. As a junior, he posted a .270 batting average and ranked 12th among NE-10 RBI leaders with 37. Prior to his senior season, Santos was named co-captain by the coaching staff. He batted .297 with 27 RBI, 10 doubles and 14 walks, and was fifth among NE-10 leaders in fielding double plays (33). "Anthony was a tremendous defensive player and brings a wealth of knowledge about the fundamentals of defense," said Harring, about to open his fifth season with the River Hawks. "He will be another key set of eyes on our bench. He brings a lot of enthusiasm and swagger to our infielders." A business major, Santos earned his share of academic honors as well, including a spot on the 2008 NE-10 All-Academic Team. He was also one of six UMass Lowell student-athletes to be inducted into the ODK Leadership Honor Society in the spring of 2008. Santos was a two-year player at UMass where he started 71 of 77 games over the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He drew the Division I scouts to Chelmsford H.S., leading the Lions to the Merrimack Valley Conference Championship in 2002 and 2003. As a senior Santos batted .328 with 14 RBI and helped CHS to a 36-10 record (14-7 in the MVC) over two years. Also a basketball standout for the Lions, Santos was named the 2003 CHS Outstanding Male Athlete. The son of Richard and Marian Santos of Chelmsford, MA, Santos lives in Lowell, MA. |
