Peter Nickerson

Player Profile

Position:
Assistant Coach

A native of Dracut, MA, who starred at UMass Lowell from 2004-07, Peter Nickerson enters his first season on the UMass Lowell staff following a magnificent four-year career with the River Hawks.

Nickerson is fresh off his first year of coaching with the Pittsfield Dukes of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) and an assistant post at UMass Boston.

Nickerson was a four-year starter for the River Hawks who compiled a career record of 20-6 and was a three-time Northeast-10 All-Conference standout (first team in 2005 and 2007; second team in 2006) as well as a two-time All-Northeast Region player by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

At UMass Boston last year, Nickerson worked primarily with the Beacons pitching staff but also served as a first base coach among other capacities. UMass Boston posted a 16-26 clip and advanced to the Little East Conference Tournament semifinal round.

Over the summer, Nickerson served as an assistant with Pittsfield alongside Head Coach Mike Marron, also a UMass Lowell assistant who was named the NECBL Coach of the Year. The Dukes were the most improved team in the NECBL with a record of 28-20, up from 13-28 in 2007.

Over the course of Nickerson's tenure at UMass Lowell, in which he spent the majority as the No. 1 starter, UMass Lowell compiled a 120-75 won-loss clip. That span also included NCAA Tournament berths in 2005, 2006 and 2007 as well as NE-10 Tournament titles in 2004 and 2006.

For his career, Nickerson ranks fifth on the all-time wins list and remains prominent in several other categories, including earned run average (fourth, 2.49), innings pitched (sixth, 228.1), winning percentage (.769) and strikeouts (13th, 139).

Nickerson enjoyed perhaps his best season as a junior in which he went 7-1 with a 2.83 ERA in leading UMass Lowell to a 37-14 record, the second-highest single season win total in program history.

As a sophomore, Nickerson posted a 7-2 clip with a sterling 1.89 ERA as the River Hawks went 28-20 and returned to the NCAAs following a one year absence.

Nickerson went 6-3 with a 2.67 ERA as a senior, helping UMass Lowell to a 33-20 clip and another trip to the NCAA Tournament. Upon graduation, he enjoyed a brief stint in the minor leagues with the Anderson (SC) Joes of the South Coast League.

Nickerson was a three-year player and Merrimack Valley Conference all-star at Dracut H.S. for coach Hank Golec.

He lives in Dracut, MA.
