Nickname
The River Hawk nickname and logo was selected in the spring of 1994 following a lengthy contest by the UMass Lowell student body and alumni. Not representative of any specific bird, the River Hawk is envisioned as a mythical bird of strength, speed and courage. It soars to great heights but never loses its connection to the river and the land below.
St raddling both sides of the Merrimack River, UMass Lowell has been a thriving center for education, research and innovation with strong ties to the industries that lined its shores for over a century.
Chad Dooley suggested the Nickname and 1980 alumnus Brian Trainor created the original logo design pictured above.
Rowdy UMass Lowell’s mascot, Rowdy, was first introduced in 1996 and received a makeover in 2007. Rowdy appears at most hockey games as well as other sporting events throughout the year. In addition, Rowdy can found around campus and at a variety of city events.
The mascot for 2007-2008 is Taylor Kibbe, a sophomore who lives Ames Hall. |
