LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.,) who backstopped the hockey team to a sweep of Hockey East rival Vermont last weekend, has been named the River Hawk of the Week.
Boyle stopped 59 of 62 shots as the River Hawks defeated Vermont, 5-3 and 1-0, at the Gutterson Field House in Burlington, Vermont. The shutout on the second night was his second of the year and fifth of his UMass Lowell career. He was called upon to make 30 or more saves for the third time this season. It was also the tenth 1-0 win in the school's hockey history.
"He had an outstanding weekend, I thought he was a rock out there," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "There were flurries out there where he had to make several saves in a row and he was equal to the task."
Boyle is among the Hockey East and national leaders in almost all goaltending categories. Boyle tops the league charts in minutes played (548:33) and saves (244.) He sits second in goals against average (1.42,) save percentage (.949) and shutouts with two. Boyle is in the top five nationally in minutes, saves, GAA, shutouts and wins with six. His save percentage places him seventh in the country. Earlier this season Boyle was honored by Hockey East as the Defensive Player of the Week.
The "River Hawk of the Week" is chosen each week in voting by the UMass Lowell Athletic Communications staff. It honors the top athlete, male or female, based on performance during the previous week of competition.
