LOWELL, MASS. – The UMass Lowell Athletic Department announced an official Guinness Book of World Records attempt will occur during the River Hawks men's ice hockey game, Friday, October 16, as part of a night honoring new chancellor, Jacquie Moloney.

During the first intermission of the game with Colorado College, Moloney will lead the fans in simultaneously lighting blue glow sticks. With a capacity crowd expected, the previous World Record of 3,712, achieved by the WNBA's Indiana Fever is set to fall.

"We are excited to honor Chancellor Moloney as she prepares for her inauguration and celebrates her first 90 days," said Director of Athletics Dana Skinner. "We look forward to the Chancellor uniting us in blue and sending UMass Lowell into the record books with this record attempt."

The record attempt has been approved by Guinness and will become official following certification from the organization.
Fans will receive their blue glow stick, emblazoned with the River Hawks logo and Chancellor Moloney's "The Best is Yet to Come" quote from her August 3 welcoming speech, as well as instructions on just when to crack the glow stick so history can be made.

"It's very important that fans wait to crack the glow sticks on cue," said Skinner. "The record is for simultaneous lighting of a glow stick, so we need fans to resist the urge to crack the sticks when they receive them."
The attempt itself will occur during the tail end of the first intermission. Chancellor Moloney will be get the countdown started and when the count hits zero, The Tsongas Center will be illuminated by nearly 6,000 blue glow sticks, lit in unison, to welcome the River Hawks back onto the ice for the second period.

"It will be a night to remember for everyone involved," said Skinner. "It is not every day you get to make history and we look forward to entering the record books as a UMass Lowell community Friday night."
Fans wishing to join the record attempt can still secure tickets for the game by visiting www.GoRiverHawks.com, while students can claim their free tickets one hour prior to the game. Puck drop against Colorado College at 7:15pm, with doors opening at 6pm.
