Former UMass Lowell pitcher Jack Leathersich continued his strides toward the majors, getting promoted to the Las Vegas 51's, the New York Mets Triple-A affiliate.
Â
The left-handed reliever has been dominant in the strikeout department for the Double-A Binghamton Mets, fanning 79 batters in just 46 innings pitched and averaged 15.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Leathersich leaves Binghamton with a 3-3 record in 37 appearances with a 2.93 ERA.
Â
"With all of his hard work, Jack is knocking on the door of Major League Baseball," said Baseball Head Coach
Ken Harring. "He has adapted well to professional baseball and has made adjustments in the minor leagues, and it is only a matter of time until he gets his opportunity at the big league level."
Â
Leathersich was selected by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft following his junior year at UMass Lowell. The promotion to the AAA affiliate is his second in as many years. He pitched in 28 games for the 51's in 2013, compiling a 2-0 record with 47 strikeouts over 29 innings.
