LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell Hockey Head Coach
Norm Bazin announced the schedule for the upcoming 2014-15 season on Wednesday afternoon, which includes seven teams that competed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and eight past national champions.
The two-time defending Hockey East Tournament Champion River Hawks open the season with Hockey East Regular Season Champion Boston College on Friday, October 10 at the Tsongas Center. Last season the River Hawks drew a record crowd of 7,649 fans vs. the Eagles last February.
UMass Lowell's home non-conference schedule includes Quinnipiac on Oct. 17, Michigan on Oct. 24, Michigan State on Oct. 25, Penn State on Nov. 14 and 15 and Harvard on Nov. 29.
"The 2014-15 will prove to be our most challenging schedule to date. We have excellent non-conference competition coming to the Tsongas Center in the first half," said Bazin. "This will be the first time we host Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Harvard in Lowell. We are also excited to host UConn as the newest member of Hockey East. Road trips this year will include Notre Dame and Minnesota which are very exciting for our club. We are very anxious for the season to start and look forward to great crowds as we defend our Hockey East title."
The team will also meet New Hampshire, a rematch of the 2014 Hockey East Championship, in a home-and-home series on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
The River Hawks will travel to South Bend, Ind. for a two-game series at Notre Dame on Nov. 20 and 21. UMass Lowell swept the season series vs. the Fighting Irish last November in Lowell.
The team will face Hockey East's newest conference member UConn on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at the Tsongas Center.
The River Hawks will play two in-season tournaments with the first coming on Dec. 27 and 28 at the Frozen Holiday Classic at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. with UConn, Sacred Heart and national champion Union College. UMass Lowell will also travel to the Mariucci Classic for games on Jan. 2 and 3 in Minneapolis, Minn with host Minnesota, Merrimack and RIT participating.
UMass Lowell will finish the regular-season with a pair of home games vs. Vermont at the Tsongas Center on Feb. 27 and 28, a rematch of the 2014 Hockey East quarterfinals.
For the first time ever the opening round of the playoffs will be a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 6th hosted by seeds 5-8, while the best-of-three quarterfinal round will be hosted by the top four seeds March 13-15 at campus sites. The TD Garden will host the 2015 Hockey East Championship on March 20 and 21 in Boston, site of the 2015 Frozen Four hosted by the Hockey East Association.
