LOWELL, Mass. – Four former UMass Lowell hockey players who left an indelible mark on the program have been named "Legends of Lowell Hockey" and will be honored before Saturday's game (October 25) against Michigan State at the Tsongas Center.
The honorees, all of whom were previously elected to the University's Athletic Hall of Fame, include three forwards and one goalie. Kevin Charbonneau, Shane Henry and Christian Sbrocca make up the forward line. The trio accounted for 186 goals and 522 points. Dana Demole is the goaltender in the group.
The foursome will be honored on the ice before the opening face off and are expected to attend a pre-game reception and post game activities.
Kevin Charbonneau, a member of the class of 1982, was a key contributor to three Division II National Championship teams. The high flying winger graduated as the program's third all time scorer with 74 goals and 193 points in 128 games. Charbonneau was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
Shane Henry, in his senior season of 1994, was a member of the UMass Lowell team that came within an overtime goal of the Frozen Four. The team defeated Michigan State for the River Hawks first ever NCAA Division I tournament win before losing to Minnesota in double overtime. Henry put up impressive career numbers with 56 goals and 158 points, third best among UMass Lowell Division I players. He was twice named a Hockey East All Star and was named an All-American as a senior. Henry entered the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
Christian Sbrocca was a part of the most successful senior class in the school's Division I history with 88 wins over the four year period ending with 1996. The team had three 20 win seasons and, twice, earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In each visit the River Hawks defeated Michigan State before losing one win from the Frozen Four. Sbrocca, an explosive and flashy forward, was a key part of the success. Scoring 56 goals and 171 points, Sbrocca is second among UMass Lowell Division I scorers. He joined the Hall of Fame roster in 2010.
Dana Demole tended net as the UMass Lowell hockey program moved from Division II to Division I and finally to Hockey East. Demole was a stalwart in the nets regardless of the level of play. In his freshman year he set the world a blaze. Demole was named the ECAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The New England Hockey Writers Association named his to their All-Star team. Demole won 27 of 28 games and finished with a 2.34 Goals Against Average and a .903 Save Percentage. He went 60-54-7 during his four year career with a 4.09 GAA and was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.
