Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) finished the day with 7 saves, but Robert Morris University (RMU) proved too much for the NCAA Division I newcomers. The Colonials scored two in the first half and three in the second, en route to a 5-1 win at Lock Haven, Penn.
RMU held advantages in shots (19 to 9), shots on goal (16 to 6) and penalty corners (13 to 6). The Colonials were led by a hat trick from sophomore Jess Martin-Brown, who scored all three of the team's second half goals to close the door on the River Hawks.
Chelsea Gillies found the back of the net in the 65
th minute to steal the shutout from RMU. With the loss, UMass Lowell falls to 0-6 on the season while RMU improved to 5-2.
UMass Lowell meets St. Francis Sunday in Lock Haven, Penn. at 2:30 PM before opening their America East slate next Saturday at Maine (1:00 PM).
