Juniors Cameron Mitchell (Wakefield, Mass.) and Devin O'Neill (Braintree, Mass.) each won titles as the UMass Lowell men's track and field team placed sixth at the University of Massachusetts Invitational Saturday.

UMass Lowell, which rested several athletes who competed at the Penn Relays earlier in the week, compiled 78 points to place sixth. The River Hawks were the sole Division II-III team in the eight-team field as Northeastern compiled 140 points to win the team title, besting the host Minutemen (117.50).

Mitchell won the 400 meter hurdles in 53.94 seconds to highlight a busy afternoon. He also ran a leg on UMass Lowell's 4X100 meter relay team which placed fourth in 42.91 seconds; and placed ninth in the 100 meter dash in 11.58 seconds.

Joining Mitchell on the 4X100 team was freshman Matt Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomores Ian Peuser (Mansfield, Mass.) and Kevin Johnston (Amesbury, Mass.).

Taylor also led UMass Lowell's 4X400 meter relay team to second place in 3:24.74. He was joined by juniors Keith Lewis (Nashua, N.H.) and Vladimir Francois (North Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Camy Ducasse (Lynn, Mass.).

Johnston and Taylor finished seventh and eighth in the 200 meter dash, Johnston in 22.89 seconds and Taylor in 22.95.

O'Neill captured the javelin with a throw of 187 feet, 3.0 inches to lead a handful of stellar results in the field events. He also placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 44' 7.0'', just behind sophomore teammate Zachary Nardone (Peabody, Mass.), who was seventh with an effort of 45' 6.25''.

Nardone also placed eighth in the hammer throw with an effort of 135' 6.0'' and was one of three River Hawks in the top eight places. Junior Kevin Peter (North Attleboro, Mass.) placed fourth with a toss of 165' 6.0 while freshman Tim McMackin (Medfield, Mass.) took seventh with a throw of 136' 8.0''.

Peter also took sixth in the discus (139' 3.0'').

Sophomore Garrett King (Amesbury, Mass.) placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing 14' 9.0'' and marking a personal record. King's result – the second-highest effort in school history – was just two inches shy of the school record of 14' 11.0'', set in 2004 by Mike Shaw.

Francois (54.58) and Lewis (57.21) also had solid efforts in the 400 meter hurdles, placing fifth and ninth, respectively. Additionally, Francois took sixth in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.37.

Senior Eric McDonald (Groveland, Mass.) was one of four River Hawks in the top 10 places in the 1,500 meters as he finished runner-up in 3:54.33. Sophomore Connor Habib (Methuen, Mass.) placed seventh in 4:02.55; freshman Lucas Parsons (Methuen, Mass.) ninth in 4:04.44; and junior Brian Donovan (Dracut, Mass.) 10th in 4:04.44.

Freshman Joe Cirnigliaro (Malden, Mass.) placed fifth in the 800 meters in 1:55.28.

Other notable results included that of junior Jake Connors (Winthrop, Mass.), who placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 6' 1.25''; and junior Tyler Sullivan (Methuen, Mass.), who placed eighth in the 5,000 meters in 15:56.68, just ahead of freshman teammate Mark Hegarty (Springfield, Mass.), who took 10th in 15:59.99.
