Day One Results

UMass Lowell's distance medley relay placed fifth and earned All-American honors while junior Elisabeth Monty (Charlton, Mass.) advanced to the final in the 60 meter hurdles to lead the UMass Lowell men's and women's track and field teams at the NCAA Championship Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The top eight athletes in each event garner All-American honors.

UMass Lowell's DMR team posted a time of 9:53.96, just behind American International, which took fourth in 9:53.41. Shippensburg won the title in 9:45.24.

Junior David Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) opened in the 1,200 meter in 3:02.77 while senior Craig Bennett (Milton, Mass.) followed in the 400 meters in 48.37; junior Scott Boiko (Chelmsford, Mass.) the 800 meters in 1:55.31; and senior Eric McDonald (Groveland, Mass.) the mile in 4:07.52.

“The men's DMR ran about as well as we could've expected,” said head coach Gary Gardner. “Brownie led off and brought us through in great position which set up the rest of the race. Eric ran a big PR in the mile which allowed us to stay in the top five.”

Monty placed eighth overall and second in her heat in the 60 meter hurdles and set a school record with a time of 8.46 seconds. She is one of eight hurdlers to move on to Saturday's final and virtually guaranteed All-American status.

“Lisl ran another school record in the first heat, and then we had to sweat it out for two more sections,” Gardner said. “She has had a great season and just continues to get better each race.
Hopefully she can sneak by a few people tomorrow in the finals to finish in the top six,” Gardner added.

UMass Lowell's women's DMR placed ninth, agonizingly one place and just under eight seconds from All-America status with a time of 11:53.47. Junior Karie Judge (Tewksbury, Mass.) opened in the 1,200 meters in 3:38.26 while senior Nicole Giaquinto (Winthrop, Mass.) followed in the 400 meter dash in 56.74; freshman Kelsey O'Driscoll (New Providence, N.J.) in the 800 meters in 2:17.89; and senior Kelly Walton (Nahant, Mass.) in the mile in 5:00.59.

“Our women's DMR ran really well” said Gardner. “Unfortunately, so did eight other teams.”

The 60 meter hurdles championship is scheduled for 5:15 (Eastern time) Saturday. Vashti Thomas of the Academy of Art won the hurdles preliminary in 8.121 seconds.

In the long jump, junior Antoinette Toussaint (Somerville, Mass.) leaped 18 feet, 7.25 inches but suffered two fouls to place 13th overall. Toussaint continues Saturday in the pentathlon beginning at 10:00.

Junior Candace Greene (Annapolis, Md.) had a similar outcome in the shot put as she threw 45' 0.25'', but also fouled twice and placed 12th in the shot put.

Senior Jeff Veiga (Lowell, Mass.) took 15th in the 5,000 meters, running the course in 14:52.34. Veiga and McDonald will both run the 3,000 meters Saturday at 7:00.

“Jeff has lost too much fitness due to his calf injury, unfortunately,” Gardner noted.

Additionally, both UMass Lowell's 4X400 meter relay teams will run tomorrow night, the women at 7:15 and the men at 7:35.
