A Testing 2014 Schedule Awaits UMass Lowell Baseball

Five opponents played in the NCAA tournament

Full Schedule

Challenging may be the best way to describe what lies ahead for the UMass Lowell baseball team in its first season in Division I and a member of the America East Conference.

The University has unveiled a schedule for 2014 that finds the ballclub on the road for 36 of 52 games and eleven contests against five teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

"It is a challenging schedule that will put us up against a number of teams that have had a great deal of success," said Head Coach Ken Harring. "We're going to have our work cut out for us and we will learn very quickly where we stand."

The River Hawks will open the season battling Monmouth University, Friday, February 14th. It is the first of four games in Cary, North Carolina. Before leaving Cary, UMass Lowell will also face Michigan State, Wright State and St. Joseph's University.

Michigan State is the first of five NCAA tournament teams on the River Hawk schedule. Virginia Tech, William and Mary, Bryant and Binghamton University also played in the 2013 edition of the tournament.

"We want to play the best," said Harring. "We want our guys to know they can compete with anybody."

The first meeting with Binghamton, a doubleheader, on, Saturday, March 15th is the River Hawk home opener at LeLacheur Park, coming after 11 games on the road, and is the first of 24 America East Conference games.

"Every team in our conference is terrific," said Harring. "The conference is very balanced, from what I've seen every game is competitive. We're going to have to work hard, the effort will be there."

Binghamton is one of two America East schools with whom the River Hawks have six games, three in each team's ball yard. The other such opponent is the University of Maine with a long and successful baseball history.

UMass Lowell will also host conference rivals Stony Brook (April 19th and 20th), a team that earned a trip to the College World Series two years ago, and the University of Hartford (May 10th and 11th). The River Hawks face the remaining America East schools, the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the University of Albany, on the road.
