UMass Lowell men's basketball head coach Greg Herenda earned his 100
th career victory when his River Hawks defeated the Felician College Golden Falcons, 75-69, on Wednesday, January 2
nd.
During his time at UMass Lowell, Herenda has helped lead the River Hawks to four consecutive NCAA tournaments. The River Hawks also earned a Northeast-10 Championship during the 2009-2010 season.
In his first year with UMass Lowell, Herenda was named the 2008-2009 Northeast-10 Coach of the Year and the National Association of Basketball Coaches East Region Coach of the Year. In that season (2008-2009), Herenda coached the River Hawks to a 21-8 record (16-6 NE-10). The success led the River Hawks to its first NCAA tournament in three seasons.
“To win my 100th game in New Jersey in front of so many family members and close friends was very special to me.” Said Herenda. “I just really appreciate how hard my players play and my coaches coach. I have had a lot of great people behind me over the years. I am a lucky guy.”
Herenda's .669 (89-44) winning percentage ranks him first all-time for UMass Lowell men's basketball head coaches.
In addition to his coaching career, Herenda had a decorated career as a player. A four-year player at Merrimack College, Herenda led the Warriors to a 17-10 finish (13-5 NE-8) in 1981-82 and a 14-13 clip (8-11 NE-8) in 1982-83. He still holds the school record for assists in a game (22) and shares the record for the single season average (9.0). He graduated in 1983 with degree in business administration and marketing.
A graduate of St. Peter's Prep High School, Herenda played for legendary coach Jerome Halligan.
Herenda and his wife, Jillene, have one son, Trey (10). He is a native of North Bergen, N.J.
