Nicole Giaquinto (Winthrop, Mass.) and sophomore
Antoinette Toussaint (Somerville, Mass.) were recognized in four events as the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its 2012 All-East Region Team Wednesday.
Zielinski, Giaquinto and Toussaint were among 13 UMass Lowell athletes to earn All-East Region status, which honored individuals whose results were among the top five places in the East Region this season. Additionally, those athletes part of a relay team which posted a top three result in the Region were also honored.
Three of UMass Lowell's 13 honorees – Toussaint, Zielinski and sophomore
Candace Greene (Annapolis, Md.) – qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championship Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26 at Colorado State-Pueblo's Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.
Toussaint and Zielinski have enjoyed benchmark seasons, both of whom peaked last weekend at the New England Championship. Toussaint captured the 400 meter hurdles at the New England Championship with a personal-best time of 60.44 seconds (0.10 seconds off the school record).
She also earned All-East honors in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.88 seconds at the University of New Hampshire Invitational; and the high jump (5' 3.75'') at the Northeast-10 Championship. Along with Zielinski and Giaquinto, she is a member of UMass Lowell's 4X400 meter relay team which posted a season-best time of 3:46.68 last weekend at the New England Championship.
Along with the 4X400 relay, Zielinski earned the honor in the 100 meter hurdles, in which she peaked at the New Englands with a personal best time of 13.96 seconds (just 0.01 seconds off the school record). Zielinski was also cited in the 100 meter dash (12.19 seconds/NE-10 Championship) as well as the 4X100 meter relay (47.42/NE-10), alongside Giaquinto, freshman
Taelour Murphy (Salisbury, Mass.) and sophomore
Diamond Jones (Lowell, Mass.).
In addition to the relays, Giaquinto was cited in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, running the former in 12.23 at the UNH Invitational; and the latter in 25.07 at the NE-10 Championship.
Jones also earned the honor in the triple jump with a personal-best 37' 1.75'' at UMass Lowell's George Davis Invitational.
Sophomore
Elisabeth Monty (Charlton, Mass.) was also recognized in two events: the 100 meter hurdles (14.28) at the New England Championship; and the 400 meter hurdles (63.53) at the NE-10 Championship.
Greene led six athletes cited for individual events as she threw the shot put 48' 0.5'' at the Penn Relays. Sophomore
Samantha Otten (Ashland, Mass.) received the honor in the javelin, which she threw 131' 0.0'' at the New England Championship.
Sophomore
Karie Judge (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior
Kelly Walton (Nahant, Mass.) earned All-East honors in the middle distances, Judge in the 800 meter (2:15.24) at the New Englands, and Walton in the 1,500 meters (4:43.53) at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational.
Sophomore
Janelle Clarkson (Seekonk, Mass.) joined Toussaint in earning the honor in the high jump, clearing 5' 3.75'' at the NE-10 Championship. Junior
Shannon Cunningham (Foxboro, Mass.) earned All-East honors as a member of the 4X400 meter relay.
