Jonathan Maniff and Ian Schaser scores for UML
DURHAM, N.H. (Nov. 9, 2007) – Carter Hutton (Thunder Bay, Ont.) made a career high 39 saves as UMass Lowell and No. 6 New Hampshire skated to a 2-2 tie Friday night in Hockey East action at the Whittemore Center.
The River Hawks move to 2-2-2 overall on the season and 0-2-2 in Hockey East play. The Wildcats are 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play with the draw.
The Wildcats opened the scoring on a goal from Paul Thompson (Derry, N.H.), his third of the year, at 3:34 of the first period. Thompson poked the puck through on a scramble in front of the net with several players down on the ice, including Hutton.
UNH took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but the River Hawks evened the score 1:48 into the second period on a goal by Jonathan Maniff (Revere, Mass.). Freshman defenseman Ryan Blair (Ashburn, Va.) sprung Maniff with a stretch pass from inside the UML defensive zone. Maniff then fended off a UNH defender to beat goaltender Brian Foster (Pembroke, N.H.) with a top shelf, backhanded shot.
Ian Schaser (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made it 2-1 River Hawks with his second goal of the season at 6:04. Schaser beat Foster with a quick, one-time tap-in goal from just off the right post on a feed from Chris Auger (Belleville, Ont.). Barry Goers (Ivyland, Pa.) had the secondary assist on the tally.
Thirty-six seconds after the Schaser goal, at 6:40, Brad Flaishans tied the contest with a wrist shot from the top of the right face off circle. Peter LeBlanc (Hamilton, Ont.) and Jerry Pollastrone (Revere, Mass) had the assists on Flaishans’ third goal of the season.
The Wildcats out-shot the River Hawks 29-11 after the first period and 41-19 for the game. UML was out-shot 42-19 at Boston University last Saturday night.
Hutton stopped 39 of the 41 UNH shots, a career high in saves for the sophomore goaltender. Hutton had 38 saves in his collegiate debut at Minnesota Duluth (10/13/06). Foster had 17 saves in the draw for UNH.
Each team went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Wildcats had seven shots on their man-advantages. UML did not have a shot on its two power plays.
The overtime game was the second of the season for UML, who tied Massachusetts, 2-2, on October 19.
“We competed very, very well tonight,” said UML head coach Blaise MacDonald. “Every single guy was on board and made major contributions. We had probably five or six guys go down long-bodied blocking shots, diving against the boards to clear pucks out of our zone. UNH did a tremendous job keeping pucks alive. They had a little bit of puck luck go their way, but we never got frustrated. I thought we did a terrific job with our defensive zone positioning, we were very poised tonight.”
UML returns to the ice Saturday night when it hosts No. 20 Massachusetts. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. New Hampshire next plays Saturday when it hosts Boston College
