Scott Campbell scores first career goal for River Hawks
BOSTON (Nov. 17, 2007) – Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.) scored his first career goal for the River Hawks, but Northeastern University defeated UMass Lowell, 2-1, in Hockey East action Saturday night at the Matthews Arena.
The Huskies improve to 5-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in league play. The River Hawks fall to 2-3-4 overall and 0-3-4 in league play with the loss.
Steve Silva (Tyngsboro, Mass.) scored both goals for Northeastern, one at even strength and one on the power play. Campbell scored UMass Lowell’s only goal on the night.
Campbell gave the River Hawks a 1-0 lead at 7:16 of the first period beating NU goaltender Brad Thiessen (Aldergrove, B.C.) with a shot from the slot off a centering feed from Mark Roebothan (St. John’s, Nfld.). Mike Potacco (Kinnelon, N.J.) had the secondary assist.
The goal was the first in the career for Campbell, a freshman center for the River Hawks. The assist gives Potacco a three game point streak. Roebothan has a two-game point streak.
Silva netted the first of his two goals on the night at 10:55 on a power play to knot the score 1-1. Chad Costello (Johnston, Iowa) picked the primary assist. Ryan Ginand (Milford, Mass.) had the secondary helper.
The trio of Silva, Costello and Ginand once again figured into the scoring of the game-winning goal. Silva got the goal with Costello and Ginand earning the assists.
Thiessen stopped 21 of 22 UML shots to pick up his fifth win between the pipes for Northeastern. Nevin Hamilton (Ashland, Mass.) made 27 saves, but suffered his second loss of the year for Lowell.
The Huskies were 1-for-5 with nine shots on their power plays. The River Hawks were 0-for-7 with three shots on their man-advantages. The River Hawks haven’t scored in 16 straight power plays.
NU out-shot UML 29 to 22 for the game. The River Hawks had just 10 shots through two periods, before totaling 12 in the third. The Huskies had 24 through two periods and five in the third.
“Northeastern is in a place that they deserve to be in at this time,” said UML head coach Blaise MacDonald. “They’re playing well. They positively took it to us for 40 minutes. If it weren’t for out goaltender we wouldn’t have had anything to play for in the third period. Fortunately we decided to play Lowell hockey in the third period. So, that’s encouraging.”
UML returns to the ice Tuesday night at Merrimack. The Huskies are next in action on Friday at Boston College.
