River Hawks eliminated from playoffs; Terriers move on to semifinals
BOSTON (Mar. 16, 2008) – Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored two goals for the second time in the series as No. 14 Boston University defeated UMass Lowell, 4-2, in Game Three of the Hockey East Quarterfinals Saturday night at the Agganis Arena.
The Terriers improve to 19-16-4 with the win and advance to the Hockey East Semifinals. The River Hawks fall to 16-17-4 and are eliminated from the Hockey East playoffs.
In addition to MacArthur’s two goals, Nick Bonino (Unionville, Conn.) and Jason Lawrence (Saugus, Mass.) scored for Boston University.
Kory Falite (Billerica, Mass.) and Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.) scored for the River Hawks. Falite ends the season with a seven-game point streak (4 goals, 5 assists).
For the ninth time in the last 10 games the River Hawks scored the first goal of the game. UML is 3-7-0 in those games.
Falite got UML on the board with his team-leading 18th goal of the season at 7:43 of the first period on the power play. Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alb.) and Ben Holmstrom (Colorado Springs, Colo.) assisted on the goal.
Campbell made it 2-0 UML forty seconds later, at 8:03 of the first, at even strength with an assist from Potacco. The goal was Campbell’s seventh of the year.
MacArthur and the Terriers rallied with four unanswered goals, three coming in the first period. Bonino got BU on the board with an unassisted goal at 9:04.
MacArthur netted the first of his two on the night on a five-on-three power play at 11:44. Chris Higgins (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge, B.C.) had the assists.
Lawrence put the Terriers ahead with his eighth tally of the year at the 14:34 mark of the first. Bonino and Kevin Kielt (Brick, N.J.) assisted on the goal.
MacArthur added the insurance goal at 7:56 of the second, his 21st of the year. Bryan Ewing (Plymouth, Mass.) had the assist.
Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) made 24 saves to record his 16th victory of the season. Bennett made 10 saves in the third period.
Carter Hutton (Thunder Bay, Ont.) stopped 23 shots, but suffered his 10th loss of the year (6-10-2). Hutton made 14 saves in the first period.
The Terriers were 1-for-6 on the power play, including 0-for-4 in the second period alone. The River Hawks, who finished the night 1-for-2 on the man-advantage, were shorthanded for five minutes and 40 seconds in during a six minute, 30 second span midway through the second.
The River Hawks finished the series 5-for-10 on the power play. UML was 8-for-23 (34.8%) on the power play in the six games against BU this season. The Terriers were 3-for-13 in the series and 6-for-24 (25.0%) against UML on the season.
BU out-shot UML 26 to 24 for the game, including 17-9 in the first.
The River Hawks finished the season with 16 wins, doubling their total from 2006-07. The Terriers play Vermont Friday night at 8:00 p.m. in the Hockey East Semifinals at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston.
