Kory Falite scores twice for River Hawks; Nevin Hamilton makes 25 saves
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (Feb. 15, 2008) – Kory Falite (Billerica, Mass.) scored two goals and No. 18 UMass Lowell defeated No. 7 Boston College, 3-1, Friday night in Hockey East action at the Conte Forum.
The River Hawks improve to 13-10-4 overall and 8-8-4 in league play with the victory. The Eagles fall to 15-7-7 overall and 9-5-6 against Hockey East with the loss.
The two-goal game was Falite’s second of the season and third of his career. He scored twice on November 10 against Massachusetts.
In addition to Falite, Mark Roebothan (St. John’s, Nfld.) scored for the River Hawks. Nick Schaus (Buffalo, N.Y.) had two assists, his first two points since November 24.
Nick Petrecki (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored the only goal for Boston College.
Roebothan got the River Hawks on the board at 6:59 of the first period. The goal was junior captain’s 12th of the season and came on UML’s first power play of the contest. Ryan Blair (Ashburn, Va.) and Schaus had the assists.
Falite gave Lowell a two-goal lead at 14:29 of the second period with a top-shelf shot from the slot. Barry Goers (Ivyland, Pa.) and Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alb.) picked up the assists.
The Eagles got on the board 2:01 into the third period to cut the UML lead to one goal. Petrecki got the goal, his third in the last two games from Joe Whitney (Reading, Mass.) and Benn Ferriero (Essex, Mass.).
Nevin Hamilton (Ashland, Mass.) made 25 saves to earn his eighth win (8-5-2) of the season. The sophomore netminder made 22 saves over the final two periods of play, 13 in the second.
John Muse (East Falmouth, Mass.), making his 29th straight start, stopped 13 Lowell shots, but suffered his seventh loss of the season (15-7-7).
The Eagles out-shot the River Hawks 26 to 16 in the game, including 13 to 5 in the second period.
UML was 2-for-4 on the power play. The two power play markers gives the River Hawks 19 man-advantage goals on the season, tying their output from a season ago. UML is 19-for-122 (15.6%) on the season. Lowell was 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
“I thought we got some good bounces with the puck tonight,” said UML head coach Blaise MacDonald. “I thought we responded well. Petrecki joining the rush and scoring that goal to start the third period put them right back in it. But I like how we responded. There were many times that we carried the play in the offensive zone. Wining the special teams against BC is critical. I thought Nevin played great down the stretch.”
The River Hawks and Eagles finish up their season series Saturday night at the Tsongas Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m
