Track & Field: Grange Leads Three River Hawks to NE-10 Weekly Honors
Thibou, Clark Cited for Stellar Effort at Tufts

LOWELL, MA (Jan. 23, 2008) – UMass Lowell junior Andrew Grange (Methuen, MA) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and led two teammates to similar honors, the Conference announced Wednesday.

Sophomore Olivia Thibou (Boston, MA) was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week while Lyra Clark (Nashua, NH) repeated as the Women’s Freshman of the Week.

The UMass Lowell women captured the Tufts Indoor Invitational Saturday while the men placed second.

Grange won the 400 meter dash and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with a time of 48.79 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in Division II thus far.

Thibou placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 8.25 inches and also took third in the long jump with a distance of 16’ 6.0’’.

Clark was a dual winner on the day as she captured the 1,000 meters in 3:03.61 and ran a 62.02-second leg on UML’s 4X400 meter relay team which placed first in 4:08.37.

Sophomores Jacqui Barrett (Woburn, MA), Haley Catarius (Marshfield, MA) and senior Gillian Mundry (Methuen, MA) were each cited to the Weekly Honor Roll for the women. Barrett won the shot put with a toss of 41’ 10.75’’ while Catarius placed first in the 600 meters in 1:38.29.

Mundry highlighted a busy day by winning the long jump with a leap of 16’ 9.25’’.

Graduate student Stephen DeWitt (Ellsworth, ME) highlighted five River Hawk men named to the honor roll as he won the 3,000 meters at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational in 8:18.99, the top time in New England this year in all divisions.

Johan Rafael (Lawrence, MA) and Cory Murray (Methuen, MA) highlighted four UML freshmen named to the Honor Roll. Rafael won the 200 meter dash at Tufts (23.16) and ran a 22.67-second leg on UML’s 4X400 meter relay team which placed second in 1:33.16.

Murray won the shot put at Tufts with a distance of 50’ 10.75’’. Freshman Chris Forbes (Methuen, MA) won the 1,000 meters (2:34.65) while freshman Sean Gelinas (Northwood, NH) captured the mile in 4:31.29.

The River Hawks enter the Boston University Terrier Classic Friday and Saturday.
