Assistant Coach Marc Kuntz
A native of Monroe, CT, Marc Kuntz is in his third season at UMass Lowell, and is responsible for recruiting, scouting and player development. A graduate of Xavier University, Kuntz came to UML following a one-year stint as head coach at Wilmington (OH) College. Previously, he served as an assistant at Wilmington (2003-04), Norwich University (2000-03) and as a manager during his undergraduate days at Xavier University (1996-2000). A member of Xavier’s class of 2000, Kuntz was a student manager under the late Skip Prosser for three years while receiving his degree in sports management. While at Xavier, he worked with current and former NBA players James Posey (Boston Celtics), Torraye Braggs (formerly Houston Rockets) and David West (New Orleans Hornets). Upon graduation, Kuntz moved on to Norwich where he served under Paul Booth as the recruiting coordinator. Having brought in two recruiting classes, he was integral in helping the Cadets emerge from a 6-18 record in 2001-02 to a 14-12 clip in 2002-03, which marked the first winning season at Norwich in six years. Kuntz then served as an assistant to Will Rey at Wilmington for one season before inheriting the head coaching reins in 2004-05. After a 1-25 finish in 2003-04, he guided the Quakers to a much-improved 10-16 clip in 2004-05 (6-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, eighth place). Last year, with Kuntz’s recruits, the Quakers finished with a 20-7 record and established a school record for wins in a season. An active clinician on the summer camp circuit, Kuntz was an instructor at the renowned Five Star Basketball Camp from 2000-2005. He has also served as an instructor at Hoop Mountain and Eastern Invitational basketball camps. Kuntz lives in Lowell, MA. |

A native of Chicago, IL, Necus Mayne enters his first year on the UMass Lowell coaching staff following a stellar playing career with the River Hawks from 2002-06. Mayne was a key player in the most successful four-year period in UML history, in which the River Hawks made three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the Elite Eight in 2003 and 2004 after winning the NCAA Tournament Northeast Regional. Additionally, UML won both the Northeast-10 Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2003 and 2004, and put together a four-year record of 95-31 (.754). Mayne spent last season as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Evanston Township (IL) H.S., to Head Coach Paul Pryma. He was a regular in working camps and clinics in the Chicago area and also served as the head coach of the Chicago Demons, a 17-and-under AAU team. Mayne replaced Will Seward, who spent two seasons at UML and was recently named to the Boston University coaching staff. Mayne will be responsible for analysis and breakdown of game film as well as scouting and recruiting. He will also serve as the team’s academic liaison. "It is an awesome feeling to be able to hire one of my former players," said Barer. "Though Necus has little practical experience, he knows me, he knows my expectations and how I want things done. He was a two-year captain who went to two Elite Eights. I don’t have to teach him those things." Mayne is the second player from the Barer era to pursue coaching. Former teammate, Brandon Arnette (2002-06), is entering his second year on the staff at Pace University. After seeing limited action his first two years, Mayne was named captain and emerged into a starter his junior year, and helped UML to an 18-10 clip (14-8 NE-10/fourth). As a senior, started 19 of 31 games, and helped the River Hawks to a 21-10 record (15-7 NE-10/seventh) and as far as the NCAA Tournament Northeast Regional title game (round of 16). A two-year player at Evanston Township H.S., Mayne led the Wildkits to the Central Suburban League championship alongside teammate and former UML standout Stacey Moragne. An honor student, Mayne was the recipient of the Evanston Township H.S. NAACP Image Award. Mayne graduated in 2006 with a degree in liberal arts. He currently lives in Lowell, MA. |
