Carr’s 16 Points Leads Four River Hawks in Double Digits
MANCHESTER, NH(Feb. 11, 2008) – Sophomore G Kevin Carr (Lancaster, OH) scored 16 points and led four players in double digits as UMass Lowell defeated Saint Anselm, 66-57, Monday night in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s basketball clash at the Stoutenborough Gymnasium.
With the win, UML improved to 10-12 overall and 7-10 in the Conference entering Wednesday’s game at Franklin Pierce (7:00). Saint Anselm slipped to 10-12 overall and 8-10 in the Conference.
Senior G Dashon Harper (Columbus, OH) added 11 points, including eight in a pivotal second half run, while sophomore C Ali Kanaan (Montreal, QUE) also scored 11 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
Senior F Mike Gore (Wilmington, MA) chipped in 10 points – all in the first half – and grabbed five rebounds while shooting 4 for 8 from the field.
The River Hawks also received a gritty effort from freshman G Max Kerman (Watertown, MA), who grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds – six offensive – in addition to four points and three assists.
Sophomore F Branimir Zeko (Mississauga, ONT) led the Hawks with a career-high 16 points, hitting 4 of 5 field goal attempts and 7 of 8 free throws, along with seven rebounds and four locked shots. Senior G Junior Mitchell (Brooklyn, NY) added 13 points and six rebounds, converting 5 of 9 field goals.
UML outscored the Hawks 18-10 on second chance points, the result of a 16-12 rebounding edge on the offensive glass, compliments of Kerman. Overall, UML outrebounded Saint Anselm 48-34.
The River Hawks also outshot Saint Anselm from long range, 27-15, and scored 29 of their points in the final 10:06.
UML led 31-27 early in the second half, but the Hawks went on a 20-6 run to post their biggest lead of the game (47-37) with 9:53 left to play.
The River Hawks responded with 17-2 tear – led by eight points from Harper – to snatch a 54-49 lead with 4:30 remaining. Zeko buried a trey to bring the Hawks within two points (54-52), but the River Hawks used a 9-2 run – fueled by five points from Carr and four from Kanaan – to post a 63-54 cushion with 1:07 to play.
Saint Anselm led at the half 25-23.
