Harper Nets 17; River Hawks Host Post Saturday
MANCHESTER, NH (Jan. 30, 2008) – Junior G Troy Bowen and freshman G Cory Vejraska each compiled 15 points and five rebounds as Southern New Hampshire University defeated UMass Lowell, 67-47, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s basketball clash at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
With the loss, the River Hawks slipped to 7-11 overall and 5-9 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s non-conference tilt against Post University (4:00). The Penmen improved to 11-9 overall and 8-7 in the Conference.
Senior G Dashon Harper (Columbus, OH) led UML with 17 points as he converted 7 of 12 field goal attempts. He also grabbed five rebounds and converted 3 of 7 attempts from 3-point range.
Bowen and Vejraska each converted 5 of 9 field goal attempts and led four players scoring in double digits. Junior G Gerald Carter scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while senior C Sam Carey also scored 14 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.
The Penmen outrebounded UML 47-28, including 34-17 on the defensive end, which underscored SNHU’s accuracy from the field. The Penmen shot .526 (10-19) in the second half while UML struggled to a .333 clip (10-30) in the second half, pulling away from a 31-21 lead a the break.
SNHU, which ranks fourth in the NE-10 in 3-point field goal defense (.310), forced UML into 6 for 23 shooting from long range (.261) while converting 8 of its 13 attempts. The Penmen also outscored UML at the free throw line 17-5.
SNHU used an 11-2 spurt to open the second half from which UML never recovered. Carey led the surge with a pair of layups and two free throws.
