Carr Converts 7 of 11 From Long Range
LOWELL, MA (Feb. 2, 2008) – Sophomore G Kevin Carr (Lancaster, OH) compiled 25 points to lead UMass Lowell over Post University, 58-54, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men’s basketball tilt at the Costello Athletic Center.
The win halted a two-game slide for the River Hawks, who improved to 8-11 entering Tuesday’s clash at Stonehill (7:30). Post slipped to 10-11 overall and host Caldwell College Tuesday at 8:00.
Carr converted 8 of 13 field goal attempts and 7 of 11 shots from 3-point range. Senior F Mike Gore (Wilmington, MA) chipped in eight points while sophomore C Ali Kanaan (Montreal, QUE) grabbed 11 rebounds in addition to three blocked shots and three points.
Senior G Arthur Robertson (Far Rockaway, NY) led the Eagles with 15 points and 10 rebounds while senior F Peter Lawal (Uniondale, NY) added 13 points and six rebounds.
The River Hawks outscored Post 27-15 from 3-point territory, and converted 8 of their final 23 attempts before misfiring on 9 of their first 10 shots from long range.
Turnovers were nearly even – UML with 15 and Post 13 – but it was the Eagles who capitalized, outscoring UML 21-14 off turnovers.
Both teams were off the mark in the first half, with Post shooting .367 (11-30) and UML .278 (10-36). The River Hawks improved in the second half, however, shooting .400 (10-25) opposed to Post’s .242 (8-33).
UML twice built leads of six points (50-44 and 52-46), but the Eagles bounced back, closing the deficit to two (56-54) with 2:27 left to play on a layup by Robertson.
Senior G Dashon Harper (Columbus, OH) weaved through the lane for a layup to give UML a 58-54 lead and the Eagles were off the mark on four field goal attempts and two free throws in the final 27 seconds.
Post led at the break 28-27.
