Wilmington Native Leads River Hawks to Sole Upset of NE-10 Tournament First Round
LOWELL, MA (Mar. 3, 2008) – Senior forward Mike Gore (Wilmington, MA), who engineered UMass Lowell’s 70-69 victory over Merrimack Saturday in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament first round, was named the NE-10 Player of the Week Monday, the Conference announced.
Gore compiled averages of 23.5 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting .667 from the floor (20 for 30) as UML suffered a 61-60 heartbreak loss to Saint Rose in its regular season finale last Tuesday; and stunned Merrimack in the NE-10 Tournament first round Saturday.
Eleventh-ranked UML, the sole team to post an upset over the weekend, visits No. 3 Assumption Monday night at 7:00.
Gore’s output over the weekend marked the second and third time in UML’s last six games that he achieved his career-high in scoring.
In the win over Saint Rose, Gore converted 10 of 14 field goals and grabbed four rebounds as the Golden Knights prevailed on a 27-foot shot with 0.4 seconds left.
Gore maintained his touch in the triumph over No. 6 Merrimack, converting 10 of 16 field goals, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range, while snatching six rebounds.
A former standout at Shawsheen Valley Regional Technical H.S., Gore is the son of Richard and Maria Gore of Wilmington, MA.
