River Hawks Visit C.W. Post Next Weekend
WEST CHESTER, PA (Mar. 2, 2008) – Junior SS Nick Spisak batted 4 for 8 with two runs and one RBI to lead No. 15 West Chester University over UMass Lowell 3-2 and 6-1, Sunday in a non-conference baseball twin bill at Serpico Stadium.
With the sweep, UML slipped to 0-4 while the Rams improved to 8-0. UML visits C.W. Post next Saturday and Sunday for doubleheaders beginning at 12:00.
In the opener, the Rams overcame a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning and withstood a late rally by UML to seal the win. UML opened the scoring in the fifth inning when sophomore LF Marco Chen (Taiwan City, Taiwan) led off with a double and later scored on a single by Manton.
WCU countered in the bottom half of the inning when junior RF Matt Cotellese smacked an RBI double to score Spisak and junior CF Nick Pare followed with a two-run single to score senior 2B Kyle Bechter and Cotellese.
The River Hawks pulled one back in the sixth when sophomore 1B Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by senior 2B Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, MA), and scored on a groundout by sophomore C Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA). Santos advanced to third, but was unable to score.
Cotellese went 2 for 2 with one run and one RBI to lead WCU. Santos went 2 for 3 while Manton batted 2 for 4 with one RBI.
Sophomore P Dan White (Southboro, MA) took the loss as he allowed five hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks while striking out three in four innings. Junior P Dave Slusser earned the win as he scattered six hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out two.
In the nightcap, Spisak batted 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI while sophomore LF Kevin McGrath went 2 for 3 with two RBI to lead the Rams.
Sophomore RF Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) batted 1 for 2 and junior C Graeme Clohosey (Derry, NH) 1 for 3 with a run to lead UML.
Junior P Bret Moyer took the win as he allowed four hits, three walks and an earned run in four innings. Freshman P Kyle Davis (Rochester, NH) took the loss as he scattered nine hits, six runs (four earned) and three walks while striking out five.
WCU opened the scoring in second inning behind RBI singles by sophomore C Brandon Wolfe and Spisak, and added two more in the fourth when Bechter and Spisak each scored on a throwing error.
UML pulled one back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) which scored Clohosey, but could muster no closer.
