Baseball: Wolstenholme, UMass Lowell Defeats Saint Rose, 2-1, in 14 Innings
Wolstenholme delivers game-winning hit in bottom of 14th with bases loaded

LOWELL, Mass. (April 17, 2008) – Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, Mass.) had the game-winning hit and UMass Lowell defeated Saint Rose, 2-1, in 14 innings Thursday night in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park.

The River Hawks have won six straight and improve to 17-16 overall and 12-5 in the NE-10 with the win. The Golden Knights has dropped four straight and falls to 10-24 overall and 8-11 in the NE-10 with the loss.

After each team scored early – the River Hawks in the first and the Golden Knights in the fifth – the River Hawks finally ended the three hour and 30 minute game on a bases loaded single by Wolstenholme.

Graeme Clohosey (Derry, N.H.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the 14th and scored the winning run. With one out, Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass.) and Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) singled and walked respectively to load the bases. Wolstenholme then hit the 2-0 pitch into right center field to score Clohosey and end the game.

Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, Mass.), who was 2-for-6 with an RBI, singled in the River Hawks run in the bottom of the first.

Casey Deuel (Queensbury, N.Y.) knocked in the Golden Knights run in the fifth with a single to right center. The single scored Angel Nunez (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who led Saint Rose with three hits in six at-bats.

Derek Anderson (Dracut, Mass.) worked a perfect 14th to get the win in relief for UML, his first victory of the season.

Jeremiah St. Louis (Tupper Lake, N.Y.) took the loss for Saint Rose after allowing the winning run on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Each team’s starters pitched into at least the seventh inning. Jeffrey Maloney (Haverhill, Mass.) allowed one run on six hits in 7.1 innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Nick DeMidio (Scotia, N.Y.) pitched eight innings and allowed just one run on seven hits. He fanned five and walked four.

The River Hawks return to the field Friday afternoon when they travel to Saint Anselm. The game, a makeup for an early sason rainout, is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Golden Knights are next in action Friday when they host Saint Michael’s in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
